WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. Ð Before the 500 rodeo contestants in the Treaty Day PRCA ProRodeo even unlatched their horse trailers, Navajo Nation welcomed in this yearÕs PRCA rodeo personnel and contractors with a reception at El Rancho Hotel Banquet Facility in Gallup, New Mexico.

The night was meant to thank the personnel that would be putting on this yearÕs rodeo, and to welcome them in taking part in the inaugural event. Those in attendance included Stock Contractor Sammy Andrews, Sound Coordinator Ben Bendele, Secretary Irene Singer, Scoreboard Operator Kevin Matias, Ò2009 Clown of the YearÓ Keith Isley and Rodeo Announcer Don Jesser.

The distinguished rodeo guests were warmly welcomed by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department, as well as Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley. President Shirley welcomed the out-of-town visitors with open arms and encouraged them to explore the area.

ÒMany of our young are in awe of you. You have a lot of fans here,Ó Shirley explained. ÒWhen youÕre not working I hope you visit Navajo Land because weÕd love to have you.Ó

The reception was formal in presentation, but it did not lose its sense of enjoyment. Serving not only as the nightÕs Master of Ceremonies, but also as its entertainment, comedian Pax Harvey playfully introduced the PRCA rodeo guests to Navajo culture. Harvey even provided the receptionÕs dinner music by singing several traditional Navajo songs.

After a hearty dinner, the guests were presented with welcome gifts that included traditional hand-made pillows and an embroidered woven rug, made by Luana Tso, which was given to Sammy Andrews for special recognition as Stock Contractor.

As the night concluded, the anticipation for the next four days built. But it was not just for the four days of grueling competition that would encompass the PRCA ProRodeo, but also for the other events that the Treaty Day Celebration had to offer.

ÒI want to go out and see some of the dances,Ó stated Keith Isley. After hearing the purpose of the Celebration in connecting younger generations of Navajos with their heritage, Isley was also excited about entertaining for the youth. ÒI want to go out and do something special for the kids.Ó

IsleyÕs entertainment should be a treat for everyone as he is not the 2009 PRCA ÒClown of the YearÓ, but also the 2009 Coors ÒMan in the CanÓ and the 2009 NFR ÒBarrel ManÓ. Known for his comedy routine of Trick Roping, Isley will also be incorporating a bullwhip and dancing into his routine.

Tickets for the PRCA ProRodeo are on sale for $12 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. For more information, visit www.navajonationfair.com.
