The Navajo Parks and Recreation Department-Special Events Section is sponsoring an Essay Contest to showcase the First Annual Treaty Days Celebration for all interested students throughout the Navajo Nation. The targeted goal of this contest is to promote the goal of the Special Events Section by encouraging our youth to learn about Dine’ history and the important significance of the Treaty of 1868. Essay & Drawing Contest winners will be announced May 19, 2010.

ELIGIBILITY: The Treaty Days Celebration Essay contest is open to all students from Middle School to High School. The subject of the essay/drawing must be related to the Treaty of 1868 or towards the Treaty Days Theme, “Greatness is Before Our Very Eyes” and must be the contestant's original work. (A contestant need not be of Dine’ heritage to enter the contest.)

CATEGORIES: Winners will be chosen in each of the following categories: o Middle School...6th thru 8th grade. o High School...9th thru 12th grade. TOPICS: Essay/Drawing topics may include any aspects of Dine Treaty of 1868 or Dine’ heritage including: ● Historical analysis of the Navajo Treaty of 1868 ● “Greatness is Before Our Very Eyes” Essay requirements for each category are listed on the contest information and entry form. The contestant's name should be on the entry form only and should not appear on the essay (Double-space, Times Roman Font, minimum 1,000 words.)

DEADLINE: May 17, 2010.

JUDGING CRITERIA: Entries are judged solely on the quality of research and the writing style of the entry. All entries will be submitted to a panel of judges, who complete a scoring card for each entry. Scores will be tallied to determine contest winners. Criteria for judging include historical accuracy, clarity, and originality of thought, creativity, and style.

CONTEST RULES *Contest is open to all students *Contest participant must be enrolled full-time in School during the time of entry *An official entry form must accompany the essay

AWARDS: Winners in each category will receive the following: Middle School: First Place: Trophy and $150.00; Second Place: Runner-Up Trophy and $100.00 High School: First Place: Trophy and $150.00; Second Place: Runner-Up Trophy and $100.00 As part of the Treaty Days Celebration; all contest participant’s consent that if selected as contest winners; winning essays or drawings may be published on promotional or marketing materials and/or electronically on the NPRD website. All entries will become property of the Treaty Days Celebration upon written release by contestant(s).

Please contact the Special Events Office - to gain appropriate pass as you visit the Navajo Nation Fairgrounds. A Written request with your company letterhead is required to obtain a Media Pass or you can print Media Request Form provided above. A Media Pass is required for anyone who is pursuing to publish Navajo Nation Fair photos/videography for any event. Please identify your media affiliation/company and the intended use of Navajo Nation Fair photo/videography.

Events will be monitored by Special Events Staff and Event Coordinators. You will need to purchase a permit for ALL commercial photography and videography. All requests have to made by May 26,2010 - 2:00pm, there will be no exceptions after this date.

Classes will begin on time. Those individuals arriving late will not have an opportunity to take the test and receive a card. PLEASE be on time. No children are allowed in the training class, unless the child is 12 years and older to take the test. The classes are for 2 hours, come prepared to take notes, and the classes are FREE.

If you have any questions, please contact the Fort Defiance Service Unit Office of Environmental Health at (928) 729-8440. There is limited seating for each location, so please plan ahead. Navajo Division of Health will be selling itinerant permits after the completion of each class. If you have any ques- tions regarding permits, please contact Navajo Division of Health at (928) 871-6349.
